From each sample, 1 g of soil was serial diluted in sterile distilled water and different dilutions were plate in a variety of agar media. After incubation (aprox. 7 d, at room temperature), the plates were examined with the aid of a steromicroscope and pure cultures were made for each morphology observed. Pure cultures were individually stored and processed for identification by means of molecular data and phylogenetic analyses. Several soil samples were obtained on a single sampling event on Harderwijk, Gelderland, The Netherlands Samples were obtained using a sterile PVC corer, hammered into the ground. Approximately 50 g of soil were taken for each sample, and deposited in sterile, plastic zip-lock bags.
