Description

This dataset contains the 2018 German Red List of vascular plants, which assesses the extinction risk of native, archaeophytic and recently established non-native (neophytic) plant species in Germany. The assessment uses national Red List criteria and provides a scientifically grounded basis for conservation policy, biodiversity monitoring, and habitat management. It was originally published as: Metzing, D.; Garve, E.; Matzke-Hajek, G.; Adler, J.; Bleeker, W.; Breunig, T.; Caspari, S.; Dunkel, F.G.; Fritsch, R.; Gottschlich, G.; Gregor, T.; Hand, R.; Hauck, M.; Korsch, H.; Meierott, L.; Meyer, N.; Renker, C.; Romahn, K.; Schulz, D.; Täuber, T.; Uhlemann, I.; Welk, E.; Weyer, K. van de; Wörz, A.; Zahlheimer, W.; Zehm, A. & Zimmermann, F. Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 5,312 records.

2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Taxon (core)
5312
Distribution
5312
VernacularName
5312

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Native, archaeophytic and recently established non-native (neophytic) plant species in Germany were considered.

Study Extent The conservation status of 5312 species of vascular plants of Germany was assessed according to the German criteria.

Method step description:

  1. To assess the conservation status, the information available on the population status and population trends of each native species is represented using the following four criteria.
  2. Current population status: estimation of the extent of the populations of a species currently established in Germany.
  3. Long term population trend: population development in the past 50 to 150 years. There are seven trend classes: very strong decrease (<<<), strong decrease (<<), moderate decrease (<), decline of unknown extend ((v)), stable (=), significant increase (>), and insufficient data (?).
  4. Short-term population trend: population development in the past 10 to 25 years. There are similar trend classes as of the long term population trend: very strong decrease (vvv), strong decrease (vv), moderate decrease or decrease of unknown extent (v), stable (=), significant increase (^), and insufficient data (?).
  5. Risk / stable sub-populations: predicts whether the short-term population trend will deteriorate over the next ten years, and whether a species will become extinct in the foreseeable future if the current level of threat remains the same or if extinction is unlikely due to a stable current population status.
  6. The red list category is based on the four criteria. There are ten national red list categories for Germany: extinct or lost (0; Ausgestorben oder verschollen), critically endangered (1; Vom Aussterben bedroht), endangered (2; Stark gefährdet), vulnerable (3; Gefährdet), endangerment of unknown extent (G; Gefährdung unbekannten Ausmaßes), extremely rare (R; Extrem selten), near threatened (V; Vorwarnliste), not threatened (*; Ungefährdet), data deficient (D; Daten unzureichend), and not assessed (nb; Nicht bewertet). A direct comparison with IUCN criteria is not possible due to different methodologies in criteria assessment.
