Description

DEMONSTRATION SAMPLE. This archive was generated for pipeline review and DOES NOT contain real observations — dives, sightings, and contributors are synthetic. Real marine dive sites and real WoRMS-synced species are used only so the schema and lookups can be exercised end-to-end; no research claim is made on any record in this file. Production archives generated from opted-in user data follow the same structure. Marine species occurrence records collected by recreational SCUBA divers using the DIVR citizen science platform. Observations follow the OBIS-ENV-DATA schema with Event core, Occurrence extension, and ExtendedMeasurementOrFact extension. Species identifications are linked to WoRMS (World Register of Marine Species) via scientificNameID LSIDs.

Couverture taxonomique

Marine taxa observed by recreational SCUBA divers and identified against the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS); every scientificName carries a matching WoRMS LSID in scientificNameID. The dataset spans 1510 distinct taxa across multiple phyla. Reef-building and other corals are additionally recorded at the assemblage level (phylum Cnidaria) as the anchor taxon for coral-cover and coral-health measurements. Only the first 500 taxa are enumerated below; the complete list is in occurrence.txt.

Méthodes déchantillonnage

Records are produced by recreational divers logging a dive in the DIVR app, normally within a few hours of surfacing. One dive is one sampling event, carrying date, dive-site position, minimum and maximum depth, and dive duration in minutes as the sample size. samplingProtocol is "recreational scuba diving" throughout. There are no transects, no quadrats and no timed counts, and observers are not trained to a survey standard. Divers record species against a site-specific candidate list. A species offered by that list and not seen can be logged as a true absence, so occurrenceStatus carries both present and absent values rather than presence only. In this sample 1,910 records are present and 365 are absent. Where a diver cannot count reliably, abundance is captured as a SACFOR category instead of a count. Positions are the registered coordinates of the dive site, not a GPS fix taken in the water. coordinateUncertaintyInMeters is therefore a fixed nominal 100 m on every event and should be read as a site-level anchor rather than a measured uncertainty.

Etendue de létude Dive sites visited by DIVR users worldwide. This sample covers 548 dives at 394 distinct sites between 3 June 2025 and 2 June 2026, concentrated in Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Egypt and the Maldives. Coverage is opportunistic: it follows recreational diving activity rather than a sampling design, so it clusters at accessible and popular sites and within each region's diving season. There is no fixed station network and no revisit schedule.

Description des étapes de la méthode:

  1. 1. The diver logs the dive in the DIVR app: site, date, depth, duration and conditions. 2. Species are chosen from the DIVR catalogue, which is synchronised with the World Register of Marine Species. The accepted name and its WoRMS LSID are stored at the moment of entry, so scientificNameID is resolved at capture rather than reconciled afterwards. 3. Per-dive environmental readings (water temperature, horizontal visibility) and any coral assessment are attached to the event as extendedMeasurementOrFact rows. Coral cover and a 1-5 coral health rating are DIVR-local scales with no external vocabulary behind them; the remaining measurement types resolve to BODC P01 terms. 4. Records are exported as a Darwin Core Archive on the OBIS-ENV-DATA profile: Event core with Occurrence and extendedMeasurementOrFact extensions.
