Description

This dataset contains the 2016 Swiss Red List of vascular plants, which assesses the extinction risk of native, archaeophytic and naturally established non-native plant species, distinguishable subspecies, apomictic plant species (lineages; asexually reproducing plant species) and hybrid plant species in Switzerland. The assessment follows the IUCN Red List criteria adapted for national use and provides a scientifically grounded basis for conservation policy, biodiversity monitoring, and habitat management. The dataset includes a legend with information on the Red List and a separate file with the vernacular names in different languages. Sampling Methods

Only indigenous, archaeophytic and naturally established non-native plant species, distinguishable subspecies, apomictic plant species (lineages; asexually reproducing plant species) and hybrid plant species in Switzerland were considered. Established non-native plant species due to human influence, cultivated archaeophytic species, non-native subspecies, varieties and forms, taxa newly included in another taxon, and taxa listed under a new valid name (synonymy) were not included.

Study Extent The conservation status of 2712 species and subspecies of vascular plants of Switzerland was assessed according to the IUCN criteria. Out of these, 99 species could not be assessed nationally (receiving the status Data Deficient; DD), which resulted in a total of 2613 evaluated species and subspecies.

Method step description:

  1. The dataset follows the standardized method of the IUCN for the criteria system. The distribution values and trends of populations were calculated based on sightings, rediscoveries and absence. These trends were used to determine the quantitative classification based on the IUCN criteria and their thresholds. Careful interpretation of experts was required to revise and re-evaluate the analyses for the Red List, as many species are under- or very unevenly sampled.
  2. The plant species were then assigned one of the IUCN categories: LC (Least Concern), NT (Near Threatened), VU (Vulnerable), EN (Endangered), CR (Critically Endangered), RE (Regionally Extinct), EX (Extinct), and DD (Data Deficient).
