Description

This dataset contains records of European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) admitted to Egelopvang Papendrecht, a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in the Netherlands. The dataset includes occurrence records from rescued individuals, with information on the date of admission, location of origin, sex, life stage, and geographic coordinates. These data provide insight into the spatial and temporal distribution of hedgehogs brought into care and can support research on hedgehog ecology, conservation, and wildlife rehabilitation in the region.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 11,059 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage

The dataset covers the region served by Egelopvang Papendrecht in the province of South Holland, the Netherlands. Records primarily originate from Papendrecht and surrounding municipalities where rescued European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) were found and subsequently admitted to the wildlife rehabilitation centre. The geographic coverage includes urban, suburban, and rural habitats within the wider Papendrecht region.

Bounding Coordinates South West [50.191, 2.637], North East [53.243, 9.316]

Taxonomic Coverage

The dataset contains records of the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), a mammal belonging to the order Eulipotyphla and the family Erinaceidae. All occurrence records in the dataset relate exclusively to this species and document individuals admitted to Egelopvang Papendrecht for rehabilitation and care.

Project Data

Climate and land-use changes pose challenges for species, such as phenological shifts, disrupted food webs, and population fragmentation. Detecting such changes requires long-term datasets that are FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). However, such datasets are scarce. The Western European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is a bioindicator for environmental health and a potential One Health sentinel. However, the hedgehog is declining in numbers and has recently been reclassified as "near threatened." To accurately reveal trends in population dynamics, long-term data is needed. However, a long-term FAIR dataset is lacking. In the Netherlands, extensive, but non-FAIR, data exist at wildlife rehabilitation centers, detailing, among other things, locations, injuries, and diseases. Much of these data is inaccessible because they are stored only on paper or in isolated databases. Without digitization, these data may be lost, undermining conservation efforts and policy. The aim of the Hedgehog Histories project is to digitize and mobilize historical hedgehog records from wildlife sanctuaries through the GBIF infrastructure and to increase the participation of wildlife sanctuaries in the NLBIF network.
